Being in love is great. Being in love with your business, when you’re an entrepreneur, is even better. Waking up each morning knowing you are getting to do exactly what you love is more than most people could ever say about any job they have had. Although there are days when tossing in your hat seems like a viable option, remembering how much you love your job can quickly snap an entrepreneur out of that mentality. Different business owners also have different reason why they love their business. It might be the products or the customers they deal with, or it could even be the fact that they are the ones in charge of it all. The reasons are as varied as the businesses themselves.
I can do well by doing good in the world
I love working on Problemio because it is the perfect business with which I can do well by doing good in the world. My business helps so many people start their businesses because it empowers them by first educating people, and then giving them tools to help them succeed. Since I offer personal help on my app, I have gotten to know people from all over the world and got to understand the issues they deal with. And with many of those people I formed relationships and keep in touch. It has been the most rewarding work I have ever done, especially considering that most people who are looking to start a business do not have much money or resources, so they are precisely the kinds of people who need support and I am happy my work provides that.

Living out my core values and life’s calling
Classic Metal Roofing Systems allows me to live out my core values and my life’s calling to serve others. As a national manufacturer of specialty residential metal roofing, I believe in our products and the impact they have on our customers and the world in terms of beauty, increased property value, and energy efficiency. But the business has to be more than just about folding pieces of metal, putting them in boxes, and shipping them off. What I really love is the ability to serve others. Servant leadership is a passion of mine. I believe that, through it, you can have a tremendous positive impact on the lives of others. Seeing our team and business live that out by going the extra mile and doing the extra things for customers that really make them smile and brighten or ease their days … that is what I live for and is why I love my business.

Because it benefits a lot of areas
My businesses are based around developing Australian wild foods and medicines for the food, health and cosmetic markets. Back in the 1980s, my research into the nutritional value of the foods of the world’s longest living culture revealed how they underpinned this amazing longevity. My love for what I do has social, cultural, environmental, conservation and (hopefully) economic benefits for Australia and the Aboriginal communities with whom I work closely. To give you an inclining of my work, imagine going out with an Aboriginal informant who shows you some fruits and tuberous vegetables. One of these fruits turns out to be the world’s highest fruit source of vitamin C (the Kakadu or Kalari plum), another has incredible sweetness and is rich in trehalose or what I call Resurrection Sugar (trade mark pending). The yams you might have enjoyed for a midday meal are creamy-textured and absolutely delicious. They end up as protective against a whole raft of diseases of nutrition which are reducing our lifespans and inflating health spending around the world. This is pioneering stuff and hugely rewarding on many levels.

Stems from a deep sense of commitment
The reason(s) behind why I love my business stems from the deep sense of gratification of our Commitment to our local Community. Aegis gives back to several not for profit Charities a certain percentage of revenues monthly. We, as a group within Aegis, measure our impact to homeless families and products donated by the thank-yous received. In todays fragile World, we are all blessed to enjoy a good meal, go to work, raise children and help where we can. More rewarding than buying a new car or personal possession. Cant take it with you.

It satisfies an urgent need
I love my business because it satisfies an urgent need and there’s nothing like it out there. I’ve always enjoyed teaching and helping kids overcome specific problems, and through my online business, I get to help kids hone their music skills and live their dreams. There’s nothing more satisfying than having a kid tell me, “You really helped me believe in myself.” The growing-up years are fraught with difficulty, and too many kids are turning to drugs, gang violence, harming themselves or others in search of who they are. I try to encourage kids to channel their frustrations into creative expression through the arts, especially music. I believe music has the power to reduce violent behavior and encourage a genuine sense of teamwork and altruism.

Just like a child…
To me a business is just like a child, you have to nuture it, feed it, shape it, and hope it continues to prosper and survive long after you are gone. It is the fundamentals of the business that are important, if a company is built on solid ground with appropriate infrastructure it should be able to survive. I absolutely love my work, it came out of a passion for understanding more how our homes effect our health-allergies, immune systems and chronic illness, and the desire to help others create home environments that promote health and well being. Every day, I am presented with a new challenges and clients that need to make their homes healthier. We are able to help them test their homes for toxins, and develop green solutions to accomplish almost any task in a house. It is a joy to help changes lives for the better and help the planet as well, it is a wonderful job to have!

Getting the chance to be creative
By 1996 I had already been in the computer industry for twenty-four years and I was tired of traditional data and information processing. I was also tired of spending hours and hours in meetings where we discussed “inside the box” thinking. I wanted the chance to be creative. The company I was working for was closing so I had to decide whether to find another job as an employee or start my own company. The Internet was just beginning and I had already developed a web site for my employer, so with the faith and backing of a few clients and my family I started my own web development company, Sperka International LLC, on my birthday. My background and experience in banking, satellite manufacturing and computer equipment sales gave me the confidence to jump into the challenges faced in the daily activities of a sole proprietor. As my business developed, I had the opportunity to hire a variety of wonderful and creative employees. Over the past 16 years we have worked with many local business owners, executives and senior staffers who all had their own dreams and goals to grow their businesses and make them more successful using the ever expanding and changing Internet. Each project requires a different creative solution. Sometimes it’s about the design or functionality or programming logic, other times it’s about the marketing and advertising programs. Every day we have the chance to think outside the box.

Bringing fantasies to life
As an avid fan of the TV show Fantasy Island, I always dreamed of taking a desire and turning it into a spectacular event. From a very young age, I have had a vivid imagination. Friends and family often called on me to help with parties and weddings. They would give me an idea or thought and I would come up with the most lavish plans. So in 2009, after my daughter’s theater theme wedding, I saw an ad for the launching of Auburn University at Montgomery first E ENT Planners Certification Class. I used my AMEX to pay the tuition and enrolled. I wanted to know the ins and outs of event planning. After 8 months, I graduated and officially launched from my home Wilshant Fantasy Events. I knew how expensive it could be hiring a wedding planner. I wanted to help others who wanted and deserved a fantastic wedding, but had limited resources. I. Show brides how to do weddings and parties on a dime. I love bringing fantasies to life.

I love the competition
I worked for a Fortune 500 company for over 20 years and was well compensated and extremely challenged. In 2005, I took the leap and became an entrepreneur and life has never been better. We own several eCommerce businesses and the competition is extreme, anyone in the world can compete with you. The internet environment is truly an open market and the challenges inspire us on a daily basis. Most people stop competing when they play their last high school game. The competition was fun in high school and even better as a business person. I am not a control freak, but an entrepreneur must enjoy the responsibility of calling and executing the plays. I enjoy the risk and return environment that owning your own business provides.

Because my work changes the lives and the mind set of people around me
I love my business because my work changes the lives and the mind set of people around me to see beyond their current circumstances. It’s not just about cleaning toilets and mopping floors, it’s about going after a bigger future and being excited about the possibilities. Being a janitor is not a glorious job and rarely is it a job that people want to make into a career. At JANCOA Janitorial Services, we have recognized this reality and put in place a program to help our employees achieve their dreams, whether it be something as large as owning their own business to smaller goals like getting their GED or receiving their driver’s license. This program is called “The Dream Manager” and it allows our employees to meet with our dream manager regularly to set goals and to help stay on track no matter the size of their goal. We have had employees quit smoking, learn a second language, and we have had several employees buy their first home! It’s wonderful to see these people grow and achieve something that at one point, they may have deemed impossible. I have told people that similar to The Blue Brothers, I am on a mission from God and I am disguised as a janitor.

Because I built a company that helps everyone find happiness at 10,000 feet
I’ve been fascinated by air travel since I was a kid, and went as far as writing multiple postcards and letters home from a single international journey when I was in high school. Since then, I became a frequent flyer for both work and pleasure and joined the online travel industry. As the products and services airlines offer evolved and my own travel increased, I found that improving my own experience became more important to me. I’d spend far too much timing studying seat maps and visiting various websites in an attempt to find the best seats on the nicest with with the most services and amenities. At the same time, I started to see industry dynamics play out first hand: airlines struggling to differentiate their products and services while distributors focus on price and schedule. It’s become too hard for flyers to understand and value their disparate options – and existing flight search sites don’t give the industry an effective way to merchandise and promote their product features. I decided to do something about it. I recruited a team of experience obsessed flyers and we built a next generation flight metasearch that combines experience – together with low prices and comprehensive flight availability. I ignored the current metasearch model that focused on price and schedule and built a new breed of metasearch that emphasized the Happiness Factors flyers care about most such as seat size (legroom and elbow room), seat layout (the fewer neighbors, the better for me), aircraft quality (I avoid old planes which are loud and dehydrating), as well as the availability of Wi-Fi, entertainment, and in-seat power. For the first time, even novice travelers can find a comfier seat, on a nicer plane, with more perks–all on one website. Routehappy launched with the mission to help people fly happier for less. Mission accomplished.

Getting to help people for a living
Why do I love my business? I get to help people for a living. It’s a real high to get feedback from someone and learn you changed their lives in a really profound way. I am humbled and amazed every time I get that sort of feedback. I write and teach applied philosophy for a living, which you would think would be a rather dry job. But because philosophy is about HOW we choose to live life and HOW we make decisions that impact our lives, it’s not only really dynamic, I get positively high when I write my columns and books. I write about what inspires me and drives me to do and to be a better person. It is not possible to be down in the dumps when you spend your day thinking about all the things you are grateful for and all the things that motivate you in life. The icing on the cake is when you find that what you’ve shared has helped someone else as much as it has helped yourself.

Giving a voice to the voiceless
I was just thinking about this yesterday. I¹ve been working as a photographer/photo editor for nearly 40 years and was wondering why I¹m still in this biz. There are many reasons, but here is my top three. First, there are many people who need to be seen and heard and my work has given a voice to the voiceless throughout my career. Second, my job offers adventure. While on assignments, I¹ve been shot off an aircraft carrier, survived being lifted up a few feet in my car in a hurricane, had lava land at my feet while shooting on the edge of a volcano and met some very wild and crazy people worldwide, my favorite being a mercenary in Southern Lebanon. Finally my 3rd reason is other photographers. Professional photographers are a unique breed who see the world around us in ways others can not understand. I enjoy working around and hanging with a few of these photographers. I miss the film days because we would all run into each other at the labs and before you knew it, there was a gaggle of us hanging out and catching up. If only the labs had been smart enough to set up gourmet coffee shops. They might still be around today.

Because I can run it from anywhere
My company creates amazing business plans for new entrepreneurs, and teaches people how to write their own. I love my business because I can run it from anywhere – I’m spending this week, for example, up in beautiful Whistler BC, and in a few weeks I’ll be running my business from Portland. After that I don’t know where I’ll be. But I’m totally confident that my company will continue to operate smoothly and bring in consistent revenue no matter where I am. Most importantly, I’m still able to deliver the top quality service my clients expect from us.

Transforming kids’ lives
I am a small business owner who helps to transform kids’ lives. I get to participate in a child’s growth of their language, their confidence, their social interaction skills, and their teamwork. These are all skills that they are going to use for the rest of their lives to be successful human beings who make a difference for each other. I love Drama Kids for what we accomplish with our children and youth. My background is in education, theater, and human services—not business, so this is a few years new for me. I don’t make a ton of money in this franchise, maybe some do. But our mission is what keeps me going.

Because it is a daily reminder that we can create work in this world that we are proud of
I love my business because it is a daily reminder that we can create work in this world that we are proud of, work that we love so much we don’t want to take a break from it. This is not just for the exceptional writer or the brilliant movie producer. This is for all of us if we give ourselves the permission and the courage to do it. I learned this the hard way because for 12 years, I did work that I did not love so creating this business was a promise to myself that for the rest of my life, I will love what I do. So that allowed me to create a brand that stands for what I believe: accessing your creative genius, writing, reading, trusting your imagination, serving the world, solving problems and creating wealth not just making money, and being able to look back and say, “Now that’s something I’m proud of!

Because I feel like I’m contributing to the greater good
I love my business because by coming into work every day, I feel like I’m really contributing to the greater good. We live in a time that celebrates small business; they provide jobs and bring about a sense of American community, both which I feel are very important. MyCorporation.com provides an online document filing service for clients who wish to form a corporation or limited liability, among other things. Essentially, we’re in the business of small businesses. It makes my heart happy to know that my business is making the dreams of entrepreneur’s become a reality.

Getting to be a pioneer in the industry
I love my business because it is an opportunity to do what I do, do it well and serve people at the same time. I can earn a living and generate income for my team while at the same time creating a system and an experience around a product that I have a passion about. I love my business because we get to be pioneers in an industry that is lacking a good system with proper focus on clients and results for those clients. We get to decide what that should look like and we get to build a brand and a personality around that. It’s a blast.

Because I get to make a difference in my community
I make a difference in my community by educating and providing awareness about the dangers of sexual predators. Through Guard A Kid of the Lehigh Valley I help children and adolescents to understand the dangers of sexual predators, including online predators, so that they can take precautions to reduce the likelihood of being victimized. I also provide child identification packages, which include digital fingerprinting, digital photographing, DNA storage, and tooth imprints. These are used in the unfortunate event that a child goes missing or is abducted. My passion is and always has been in protecting and serving the public, which is one of the many reasons why I absolutely love teaching and sharing my experiences working with violent sexual predators with my criminal justice students at American Public University and my community. Bridging my love and passion for teaching with my Guard A Kid business has been incredibly rewarding; knowing that I am playing an integral role in protecting children is simply priceless.

Because I get the opportunity to be challenged
As a digital agency, we must imagine new business models while understanding industry specific challenges. We must strategically and creatively use technology to achieve marketing and business goals. We get to cross-pollenate ideas from one industry sector to another which can be extremely creative and fun for clients. We also have the opportunity to further develop technology through integration and automation to achieve outcomes for clients that they never thought possible. It’s not really about clients challenging our team. The clients do present a challenge and even the potential opportunity that they see, but we get to return with a unique vision that creates domino like reactions. We like to think the Rube Goldberg machines best represent our marketing concepts. One action causes another, which then causes another, and soon you have great conversion rates with automated marketing. Who else gets to ask what does a national pharmaceutical company and a regional cupcake chain have in common for marketing, and how do we create this automated marketing system? We love seeing our visions become reality.
