Why Did You Start Your Business? Week of November 25th

Entrepreneur

For individuals that constantly view financial statements or business plans each business looks eerily the similar. Even sometimes the brands, logos and names make consumers scream for the days of uniqueness. Peeling back the skin of business, it is often the entrepreneur and business owner that makes a business unique. Each and every business has an entrepreneur and unique story for launching his or her business, and it is that story which make each business special.

I Saw an Opportunity

I have a background in technology, but I also have a passion for the law.  After I finished law school, I realized early on that most law firms don’t know how to market themselves effectively. In today’s rapidly changing technological environment, many law firms were still trying to figure out how to brand and market themselves using the internet.  I saw an opportunity to help other law firms achieve the success I had built in my own law firm and the idea for WebShark360 was born.  I sold my successful law practice and set out to create a legal advertising agency with a “dream team” of highly experienced employees.  Together, we’ve been able to build an immensely popular agency serving some of the most successful legal practices across the country.  Operating out of our 8,500 sq. ft property in Irvine, CA, we’ve been able to help dozens of firms achieve success.  We’re still growing, but our goal is to become the number one legal advertising agency in the country.  We’re well on our way and we can trace it all back to recognizing a need for the business and having the right solution.

It Was My Dream

I spent the majority of my working years (30+) in corporate America. At different points of my career, the politics, monotony, travel and feeling of being part of ‘the rat race’ took its toll. The reality of clocking in, warming a chair, working for ‘the man’ became less and less appealing to me. I’d regret it if I’d only ever done that with my work life. So I would look intently at buying or starting a business to avoid that regret and get more joy out of ‘work’. In 2011, I bought Earth’s Living Clay while still working in corporate America. While plotting my escape to work the business full-time, I was laid off in February of this year. The Universe conspired with me to help make my dream come true. Through extreme resourcefulness and very little money, I have learned about brand building, trademarks, packaging, website design, e-commerce technology, email and social media marketing, blogging, wholesaling, tradeshows, shipping internationally, affiliates, hiring and managing employees, online and offline networking and more.  When I get discouraged – and that comes with the territory – I consider the alternative of going back to corporate America and press on with my small business.

Because The New ‘Use By’ Date Is 42 And I Was 52

I suddenly lost my executive position and realised I could hope for another position and probably experience yet another merger, downsizing, right sizing or whatever OR at the age of 52, well past the corporate ‘use by date’, start my own business. In the last 100 years, there have been 3 depression proof sectors: alcohol, tobacco and skin care. I choose skin care and began working from home selling anti ageing skin care products. I decided to later write about my experiences in transitioning from the corporate world to the small business world and to give hope to those who have gone down that path, as well as providing some inspiration and insights in setting up a small business from home.

To Help People Better Express Who They Are

We started our business ShirtSayings.net to help people better express who they are, what they believe, and how the world ‘can be' from their perspective. We know that the words people say matter, so our company helps to broadcast your words on the clothing that we all wear every day.

To Take Care of My Father

In April 2011, Good Friday I lost my position as a Resident Service Coordinator after practicing nursing for 33 years. Along with this, I was taking care of my dad who was declining in health, moving him from hospital to rehab then assisted living.  Dad's decline was rapid and they wanted to place him in a nursing facility. With my knowledge, I was aware of many options to keep him safe and provide the best care. Prior to becoming bedridden, Dad kept slip/sliding out of his chair and I started sampling my new product SafetyBunns non-slip pants. It was a success and Dad was my living testimony. I knew this was a sign to move forward and start my own business which I was in search of as the nursing roles have changed over the years. My idea for nonslip pants came to thought in late 2009 after witnessing numerous seniors repeatedly falling, slideslipping from chairs, beds and wheelchairs along with the handicap residents.  Some incidents caused serious injuries which they never recuperated from causing institutionalization at long term care facilities. My mission is to keep seniors or a physically challenged person in the home, group home, or assisted living. For those residing in a nursing facility, protect from recurrent hospitalizations and injury. I have witnessed many times, once an injury occurs the elderly never recover.  SafetyBunns nonslip pants will decrease the risk of injury and loved ones can rest assured. SafetyBunn’s mission is to decrease slip/slides, promote safety and expose a new “one of a kind product”. Reducing injuries is a global priority. Sliding down/out from chairs and wheelchairs is a leading cause falls in elders and other susceptible people. I hope you find my new product as well, an inspiration protecting our growing population of seniors.
