Entrepreneurs Share Their Tips and Tricks for Staying Motivated

When the going gets rough in business, you’ll need the motivation to keep moving. Motivating yourself can be hard but practicing consistent habits such as reminding yourself of why you started can be a major boost. A network of friends and partners can also serve as a great assurance and reminder that you’re not walking alone.

Here are the various ways entrepreneurs and business owners stay motivated in business.

#1- By achieving something new every day

Motivation comes in various forms for different people. Some are motivated by power, some by affiliation and others by personal achievement. For me, personal achievement has always been at the top of the list. I'm not happy in the day if I don't feel that I've achieved something new. I feel that the ultimate goal should be fun to achieve, which makes it more meaningful and those small, personal achievements every day get me one step closer to where I want to be. The power and influence within my field will naturally come along for the ride as I grow.

#2- Having constant objectives

I've discovered that having constant objectives that stem from an overall vision motivates me to continue striving for growth and new ventures. In the beginning, it was much harder to clearly see my vision but once I started generating revenue from my ideas, I needed more confidence. That self-belief helped me to develop an overall vision of making a profit by having a beneficial relationship with nature. It became easy to develop objectives for this. I knew what I could and couldn't do if I followed that vision and that makes me motivated, each day.

#3- By focusing on the bigger picture

Motivation needs to come from outside of the business. As a business coach, I see too many people hang their self-confidence on their business outcomes. It's a very dangerous game to play. I focus on the big-picture change I am looking to make in the world. I know that I won't impact 10,000s of people but if I can make life a little sweeter for 2-3000 I feel like I have accomplished something meaningful. Supporting my family is also a big motivator.

#4- Harnessing cutting-edge tools and techniques

For me, the ever-evolving landscape of technology serves as both a challenge and an inspiration. In this fast-paced world, each new advancement presents an opportunity to push boundaries, improve processes, and reach new heights. The thrill of harnessing cutting-edge tools and techniques to drive my business forward is what keeps me motivated every single day. It's not just about staying ahead of the competition; it's about embracing the endless possibilities.

I stay motivated by setting clear goals aligned with my vision, breaking tasks into manageable steps, and celebrating small wins. Regularly revisiting the purpose behind my work and seeking inspiration from industry leaders and success stories also fuels my motivation. Cultivating a positive work environment, fostering a supportive team culture, and prioritizing work-life balance contribute to sustained motivation. Additionally, I stay adaptable and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.

#6-  By delivering tangible value to the organization

My motivation stems from the opportunity to drive impactful marketing initiatives, foster team collaboration, and achieve measurable results. Additionally, I find motivation in developing and leading a team, empowering them to excel and innovate in their roles. My passion for the industry fuels my drive to stay updated with marketing trends and technologies, ensuring that our strategies remain cutting-edge and effective. Ultimately, my motivation lies in delivering tangible value to the organization through strategic marketing leadership and team empowerment.

#7- Revisiting the reasons why I started my business

One of the other things that keeps me motivated is revisiting the reasons why I started my business. What is my mission and values? I have a brand strategy that I often revisit, and a summary of it that I keep handy on my phone to regularly remind myself of my brand’s core. It serves as a powerful reminder of my purpose and further fuels my determination to overcome challenges and smash my goals. Additionally, I find visual cues incredibly helpful! I have a visual board in my office where I display my goals, aspirations, and milestones.

#8- Four ways

First, I remind myself of my goals and why I started this journey in the first place. This helps me stay focused and driven. Secondly, I surround myself with like-minded individuals who understand the challenges of entrepreneurship and can offer support and encouragement. Additionally, I make it a point to celebrate small wins along the way. Lastly, I constantly seek out new knowledge and stay up-to-date with industry trends. This thirst for learning keeps me engaged and motivated to constantly improve and innovate.

#9- From seeing the impact of the things we create

Staying motivated as an entrepreneur in a dynamic industry like design and retail really involves a level of passion and commitment. I draw a lot of inspiration from seeing our products come to life, seeing the impact of our pieces on people’s lives, and enhancing the spaces where they live and work. Seeing the impact of the things we create helps reaffirm the value of our efforts and drives me to push boundaries further, which has really helped push me through slumps in motivation.

#10- Connecting to a deeper sense of purpose

I find that connecting to a deeper sense of purpose or mission is key and focusing on the positive impact our work can have, rather than just financial gain, provides a wellspring of inspiration. Not only that but I find that celebrating small wins, and milestones, and surrounding myself with a supportive community, also helps sustain momentum. Practicing self-care through activities like meditation can recharge my mind and body and ultimately, tap into intrinsic drivers like creativity, and control.

#11- Having a non-negotiable time for myself

As a small business owner without any investors or partners, I don't take it lightly that my business is not only supporting my family but that of my staff as well. That responsibility makes me want to work hard and be as successful as possible for them.  Leading them to be the best providers that they can be as well as staying available for any questions or help that they need along the way. I try to have non-negotiable time for myself too, so that I have a clear head and can fully be present when my staff needs me, so it's a constant balance of self and team but so worthwhile!

Thanks to Dannah Boston, The Esthetic Co.!

#12- By setting clear goals

Staying motivated as an entrepreneur involves finding inspiration in both the big picture and the small victories. I keep my passion alive by setting clear goals and regularly reminding myself of the impact I want to make in my industry. Celebrating even the smallest achievements along the way helps me stay positive and focused. Surrounding myself with a supportive network of fellow entrepreneurs and mentors provides encouragement and fresh perspectives when challenges arise. Ultimately, my drive comes from a genuine love for what I do.

#13- Seeing the real growth and wins

For me, it’s all about the difference we’re making for the entrepreneur and business community. Seeing the real growth and wins our platform brings to our customers keeps me going. I love to challenge myself with goals that push me to be better and think outside the box. Also, taking time for some self-reflection and making sure I’m looking after myself helps keep me balanced. This way, I can kick off each day feeling fresh and ready to tackle whatever comes my way. To my fellow entrepreneurs, my tip is this: find that spark in your work that excites you the most and hold onto it.

Thanks to Valentin Radu, Omniconvert!

#14- From two things

Honestly, I find it really difficult to stay motivated at times. It’s because I work in an industry that is often overlooked, misunderstood, and misrepresented. So, where do I get that from? Firstly, self-belief is huge. I truly feel that you can’t advocate for others if you don’t have confidence in yourself, and if you want to hold your own in professional settings then you need to believe you belong there. Secondly, I believe in the work I am doing. Sure, it might be a little unconventional, but actually, there is a need for it, nonetheless.

#15- By reconnecting with my purpose

One key source of motivation for me is reconnecting with the purpose and positive impact we strive to create. This sense of mission fuels my passion. Stepping away to rest and recalibrate allows me to avoid burnout and return to my work feeling refocused with renewed motivation and perspective. Sustaining long-term motivation requires a balanced approach of tapping into deeper sources of purpose and passion, and making self-care a priority through strategic periods of rejuvenation.

Thanks to Justin Crabbe, Jettly Inc.!

#16- Evolving with the industry

Avoiding stagnation is not only important to the success of my business but also to keeping me motivated at work. Fortunately, the trade show and exhibiting industry is always changing. Whether it’s working with a new customer or at a new trade show or adapting to new technologies, there is always more to learn. I love the challenge of keeping up with these industry changes so I can better anticipate my client’s needs and make sure we’re at the forefront of our products, services, and processes. It motivates me to keep growing my team’s skills and capabilities.

#17- Connecting to others

Staying motivated is especially challenging for me as I suffer from numerous chronic illnesses and live in constant pain. The ability to connect to others through the joy that toys bring is what keeps me going. I experienced homelessness as a teenager and understand the emptiness of not having belongings of my own. Hence we provide a variety of toys and services through our partnership with Bayside Salvos – Houses of Hope Program.

Thanks to Bethany Chambers, Merry Go Round!

#18- Constantly reminding myself why I started

Staying motivated as an entrepreneur involves constantly reminding myself why I started. I focus on setting clear, achievable goals and celebrating small victories. I also believe in the power of a positive mindset and surround myself with a supportive network of like-minded individuals who inspire and challenge me. Reading about my field's latest trends and success stories fuels my passion and drives me to innovate. I maintain a healthy work-life balance, which rejuvenates my energy and keeps the creative juices flowing.

#19- Reminding myself that perseverance is key

My entrepreneurial journey is deeply inspired by Nelson Mandela. His unwavering perseverance in the face of 27 years of imprisonment during the fight against apartheid is a testament to the power of purpose. As his famous quote goes, “Do not judge me by my success, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.” This is a constant reminder for me, especially when things get tough. For any entrepreneur, perseverance is key. Knowing your purpose, defining your goals, and fueling your passion are the essential ingredients for success.

#20- Setting realistic goals

Setting realistic goals and constantly reminding myself of the reasons why I started my business helps me stay motivated. It's essential to have a clear vision and purpose as an entrepreneur. Moreover, surrounding myself with like-minded individuals and seeking inspiration from successful entrepreneurs also keeps me motivated. Seeing others achieve their goals motivates me to work harder towards my own. As an entrepreneur, I've learned to embrace failure and use it as a learning opportunity instead of getting demotivated by it.

Thanks to  David Zhang, Kate Backdrop!

#21- By prioritizing my family

My family is at the heart of everything I do, and the realization that my job directly impacts their happiness and future inspires me to push through the high demands of work each day. Despite the challenges and pressures of my profession, I am driven by the desire to provide them with a better life and opportunities. Their well-being, growth, and achievements are my utmost priorities, and this profound dedication fuels my resilience in balancing the demands of work with the joys of family life. Their presence reminds me of the greater purpose behind all of my everyday efforts.

Thanks to Dr. Patrick Wilson, Wellpet!

#22- Seeing the positive impact of my work

What keeps me motivated in this endeavor is seeing the positive impact on pet owners and animals. Each connection and piece of advice shared within the community reinforces my belief in the importance of education and compassion towards animals. The gratitude and support from fellow pet lovers inspire me to persist and expand the reach of this initiative, knowing that I am making a meaningful difference in the lives of pets and their owners. This sense of purpose fuels my determination to continue this work with enthusiasm and dedication.

Thanks to Dr. Mollie Newton, PetMeTwice!

#23- By remembering my ‘why'

Aside from my passion for numbers, I stay motivated by remembering my ‘why'. When I first set out to build my own business, I sat down and documented the personal goals I wanted to achieve by doing so. Securing financial freedom for my family was top of my list, along with several other important milestones. These goals essentially list the reasons why I got into business. I printed and framed my initial list of goals and have it sitting on my desk, where it serves as a daily motivator that what I'm doing is putting me one step closer to achieving everything I want.

Thanks to Paul Carlson, Law Firm Velocity!

#24- Diving into podcasts tailored to my industry

As a digital nomad, diving into podcasts tailored to my industry isn't just about passive listening; it's my daily dose of entrepreneurial adrenaline. Each episode becomes a vibrant place for ideas. Through their stories, I gain practical strategies and a profound sense of camaraderie which is a reminder that I'm not alone in this exhilarating journey. No matter where I am in the world, these podcasts serve as my virtual mentors, igniting my creativity, reinforcing my resilience, and fueling my entrepreneurial spirit, propelling me forward with determination and continued excitement for the road ahead.

Thanks to Danielle Hu, The Wanderlover!

#25- Finding things that motivate me

Over 14 years on the roof and I can tell you, it takes more than just muscle to stay motivated in this line of work. Here's what keeps me going: Seeing the finish line, The team up there, The challenge, Taking pride in my work, Setting goals and crushing them, Taking care of myself, Learning, and growing, and Finding joy. Being a roofer takes more than just showing up. It's about finding the things that motivate you, that make you want to get up there and do your best work, day in and day out.

Thanks to Craig Young, Roof Doctors!

#26- Witnessing joy on the client's face

In the five-plus years I've been a professional home buyer, staying motivated has been crucial. Witnessing the joy on a young couple's faces as they embark on their family journey, or seeing the relief wash over someone who's finally found a place that truly fits their needs – those moments are powerful motivators that fuel my dedication. Finally, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is paramount. Scheduling regular breaks, disconnecting after hours, and pursuing hobbies outside of work all help me recharge and come back feeling energized.

#27- From various sources

Staying motivated in my role as a professional home buyer requires drawing inspiration from various sources. Firstly, the diverse nature of properties ensures that each deal presents its own set of challenges and possibilities, which keeps my work dynamic and intriguing. Secondly, the gratification derived from assisting clients in finding their ideal homes or investment opportunities serves as a powerful incentive. Additionally, staying abreast of market trends, emerging technologies, and innovative strategies is crucial for maintaining a competitive edge.
