30 Entrepreneurs Explain Why They Started Their Own Business

Entrepreneurs Explain Why They Started Their Business

Each business has a story. No matter if the business is a Goliath like Wal-Mart or a local business owned by a couple or family, the business has roots in an idea. For each business owner, the story of their journey can range from monetary needs to the passion for a unique project. Each story is different though the reasons may remain the same. No matter the tale, the background behind each and every business is what fuels each brand.

We asked some entrepreneurs what their story is. Here are their responses:

#1- To provide high-quality rugs

I started Southwestern Rugs Depot because I saw a significant gap in the rug market that needed to be filled. Many online rug companies didn't offer consistency in quality or have knowledgeable customer support. I wanted to change that by focusing solely on high-quality American-made rugs and providing personalized service. Leveraging my industry connections and experience, I knew I could offer better products and prices. The positive response and repeat customers have confirmed that there was indeed a need for this level of commitment to quality and service.

Thanks to Connor Butterworth, Southwestern Rugs Depot!

#2- To provide solutions for musculoskeletal issues

I started Advantage Physiotherapy with a simple mission: to provide exceptional care and effective long-term solutions for musculoskeletal issues. After years of working in different settings, I saw a gap in the quality of treatment and the personal touch that patients often miss. I wanted to create a place where people felt genuinely cared for, and where clinical expertise was the norm, not the exception. My goal was to ensure that anyone walking into our clinics would leave with a clear plan for their rehabilitation and a sense of hope for their recovery.

Thanks to Calum Fraser, Advantage Physiotherapy!

#3- To revolutionize the ice sports industry

I founded Glice because I saw an opportunity to revolutionize the ice sports industry while addressing environmental concerns. Discovering an ecological alternative to traditional ice rinks inspired me to collaborate with inventor Toni Vera and launch Glice. Our mission is to make ice skating accessible worldwide with zero energy and water usage, championing sustainability through innovative synthetic ice solutions.

Thanks to Viktor Meier, Glice!

#4- To provide guidance and leadership to law firms

We started Law Firm Velocity because we recognized that many attorneys struggle to find true experts in law firm finance, leading to inaccurate bookkeeping and unclear financial plans that hinder their growth. Traditional accounting firms often lack the specialized knowledge required to serve law firms effectively, such as understanding the intricacies of Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts (IOLTA) trust accounting or the unique KPIs that drive law firm profit margins and growth. And so our goal was to provide law firms with specialized guidance and financial leadership.

Thanks to Paul Carlson, Law Firm Velocity!

#5- To revolutionize legal SEO with ethics and results

I started my business because I saw a glaring need for ethical, results-driven SEO specifically tailored to the legal industry. Working as the marketing director for The Reeves Law Group in Los Angeles showed me firsthand how challenging it was for outstanding law firms to connect with people in need of legal expertise. I believed in the importance of making top-tier legal representation accessible and realized that many law firms were underserved in their digital marketing efforts. So, I took the leap to create a company that could bridge that gap.

#6- To support and empower beauty professionals

I started my business because I saw a significant gap in quality education and products in the beauty industry. Working closely with leading professionals, I realized that many aspiring estheticians lacked access to reliable training and exceptional tools. This fueled my passion to create a platform that offers both high-quality products and top-notch education. My goal was to elevate the standards of beauty services across the board, ensuring that estheticians have everything they need to thrive.

#7- To groom men with accessibility and discretion

I started Formen Makeup because I saw a clear gap in the market for men’s grooming products that are simple, effective, and discreet. My experiences in school and university showed me that men also needed solutions for skin issues, but there were hardly any products catering to us. It was personal—I wanted products that didn’t make you feel out of place using them. Today, our range from concealer sticks to anti-aging creams reflects that mission of making makeup and skincare accessible for every man, regardless of age.

Thanks to Andrew Grella, Formen Makeup!

#8- To remove hair with cutting-edge technology

I started Infinity Laser Spa because I saw a gap in the market for effective, long-lasting hair removal solutions. Traditional methods like waxing and shaving just weren't cutting it for many people, causing temporary results and discomfort. I wanted to provide a place where people could experience the latest in laser technology, ensuring permanent hair growth reduction in a safe and comfortable environment. It was important to me to have a team of highly trained technicians who could deliver top-notch results with state-of-the-art machines.

Thanks to Sam Rock, Infinity Laser Spa!

#9- To enhance communication and collaboration

Understanding the profound impact that effective soft skills can have on both individuals and organizations inspired me to start HRDQ. For over 35 years, I've seen firsthand how tools designed for adult learning and development can drive performance, improve teamwork, and foster more dynamic leadership. HRDQ was born from the desire to equip learners of all levels with the skills necessary to succeed in today's ever-changing workplace landscape. #10- To pursue what I love

My journey into real estate started with a piece of advice from my father: do anything you want, just don’t be a banker or a realtor. After earning my Finance degree, I realized my passion for helping people navigate one of the most significant decisions of their lives—buying a home. It felt natural to combine my financial expertise with a personal touch, creating a real estate experience that’s both informed and compassionate. Today, Gluch Group stands as a testament to the idea that true success comes from pursuing what you love, not just what’s expected.

Thanks to John Gluch, Gluch Group!

#11- To turn my passion into a business

Starting Bella All Natural was a natural evolution of my lifelong passion for health and wellness. Growing up selling vitamins at a flea market stand with my mother taught me the incredible impact of natural products on people's lives. Over time, I realized there was a significant gap in the market for holistic, all-natural solutions. Fueled by a desire to provide better health options and create a community of wellness enthusiasts, I knew I had to turn this passion into a business.

Thanks to Daisy Cabral, Bella All Natural!

#12- To promote holistic health

I started my business driven by a passion for promoting holistic health through lifestyle medicine. Recognizing the limitations of traditional medical consultations, I envisioned a practice where longer appointments allow for in-depth discussions on nutrition and lifestyle changes. This approach empowers patients to harness their body's natural ability to heal. By focusing on weight loss, health improvement, and chronic disease prevention, our clinic advocates for sustainable changes that can lead to lasting wellness.

Thanks to Avi Charlton, Melbourne Low Carb Clinic!

#13- To provide assistive technology

Being dyslexic, I struggled through school, medical school, and even at work as an NHS doctor. While I was still a university student, my friend and I created a piece of software to help students like us with the complexities of medical jargon. This piece of software transformed my studies and I was able to see first-hand how much of a positive impact assistive technology can have. At the same time, I saw an opportunity to broaden what we could offer to those in the wider world of assistive technology and this was when our business, CareScribe, was born.

Thanks to Richard Purcell, CareScribe!

#14- To contribute positively to the community

Starting Latico Leathers came from a deep passion for quality craftsmanship and a desire to fill a gap in the market for versatile, stylish bags that resonate with the everyday woman.  Our bags are not only about looking good but also about feeling good. We wanted to produce items that are crafted with responsibly sourced materials, reflecting a bohemian and independent spirit. This isn't about competing with luxury brands; it's about offering authenticity and contributing positively to the community.

Thanks to Ben Schreiber, Latico Leathers!

#15- Capture the essence of my client's style

My inspiration stemmed from a deep-seated love for crafting custom jewelry that tells a story. Working with various jewelers, I saw the joy and significance that a custom piece can bring to someone's life. This realization ignited my desire to create a brand where every piece is tailored to capture the essence of my client's style and most cherished life moments.

Thanks to Rachel Lake, Rachel Beth Jewellery!

#16- For my desire to help people

Her passion lies in transforming chaos into order, enabling individuals to move from feeling overwhelmed and burnt out to being uplifted and empowered. In the realm of personal growth, Trish dives deep with her clients to uncover the root causes of their struggles, whether they feel lost, defeated, or simply stuck. This understanding allows her to guide them towards significant shifts that elevate their lives.

#17- To help businesses grow online

Actually, there were not one but two main reasons for starting this business. First, I saw a gap in the market for agencies that could truly provide a one-stop shop for businesses. Many people struggled to find partners who could handle both the technical aspects of web development and the strategic marketing side of things. Secondly, I'm passionate about helping businesses grow online. There's a lot of satisfaction in taking a client's vision and turning it into a digital presence that gets results.

Thanks to Rahul Vij, WebSpero Solutions!

#18- To bridge industry gaps

I started Health In Tech because I saw a clear need to address the gaps in the industry between benefits, quoting, administering, and using benefits. Using my background in health coverage along with my passion for innovation, I wanted to create tools that will help brokers and small businesses navigate the ever-changing landscape. Our mission, at Health In Tech is to demystify these processes using a customer-centered approach while helping to add value to our clients.

#19-  To keep sailors safe

PredictWind is a passion project driven by my desire to keep sailors and ocean goers of all ilks as safe and prepared as possible. I spent years accessing the very best private wind and marine forecasting tools in the world

Thanks to Jon Bilger, PredictWind!

#20- To turn home-buying overwhelm into dreams

I started my business out of sheer necessity and a deep personal struggle. Moving across the country with two toddlers, and teetering on the edge of homelessness was a nightmare. We finally bought a house, only to realize we had overpaid by $40,000 for a home that wasn’t right for us. This heart-wrenching experience made me realize that no one should have to go through this alone. My mission is to turn the overwhelming and stressful journey of buying a home into an empowering and informed adventure for everyday Australians, ensuring they secure a great home.

Thanks to Natalie Brusnahan, Storybook House!

#21- To provide a solution for employee benefits

Canal HR was started after we recognized there was a significant need among small to medium-sized businesses to provide top-notch benefits for their employees without the overwhelming burden of managing costs and navigating the complex world of HR paperwork. Our vision was to create a solution where businesses could excel at what they do best—growing and innovating—while we handle the intricacies of employee benefits and administration.

Thanks to Mitch Chailland, Canal HR!

#22- To create a gender-affirming lingerie store

The inspiration behind our new brand Tuck & Bind stemmed from a growing demand we witnessed in our lingerie store. More and more customers were seeking underwear that truly affirmed their gender identity. Their joy in finding the right fit ignited a spark in us that led us to create Tuck & Bind, a brand dedicated to gender-affirming underwear right here in Melbourne. With our in-store fittings in a safe and supportive space, we make it easy for everyone to find the perfect fit. Our collection caters to individuals across the gender spectrum, so they feel empowered in their own skin.

On a personal level, starting my own business allows me the freedom to create, innovate, and make a real difference in an industry that often goes unsung alongside others who feel the same way.

Thanks to Gemma McDonnell-Mossop, Payroll Edge Consulting!

#24- To optimize my expertise

Having worked in a successful agency environment I was allowed to work overseas for an extended period. Knowing the impact that this would have on the team, I had to look for ways in which I could make this a reality without inconveniencing too many people. This is one of the driving forces behind starting my own HR consultancy business. Now, I have the autonomy to curate a client base that aligns with my values and expertise. No longer confined by a one-size-fits-all structure, I can define processes and procedures that optimize my working style and maximize efficiency.

Thanks to Jess Gleeson, Becoming HR!

#25- For an alternative to mass-produced homewares

With a background in television and a Diploma in Interior Design, I have always been a visual person. Add to that a lifelong love of textiles and it was natural to establish something in the Interiors space so, Eco Interiors was born. #27- To create a world where grief isn't a label

When my first book “Loving Life after Loss” ranked in the top 100 Amazon bestseller list of Australia, I knew I had something the world needed. I simply followed that call. 4 more books and a TEDx talk later, my biggest focus has become sharing “The Power of Grief” in my keynotes. My biggest WHY are my sons! I want to create a world where grief isn't a label that tries to silence us with “My condolences”. We need more people holding space for each other, where we celebrate the lives of our loved ones, filling the holes they left behind with Love and compassion!

Thanks to Marie Alessi

#28- To help families delegate their “life list”

Having experienced burnout myself, I was very aware of the challenges that faced working women who are managing to juggle careers, family, and life. My children were grown, so although not amid morning and afternoon chaos I could resonate with the many hats that we wear daily of wife, mother, daughter, friend, employee/entrepreneur leaving little time for ourselves. We can outsource many parts of life, but that in itself becomes another part-time job, communications, scheduling, and paying. Finer Details Lifestyle Management is that one-stop service for families to delegate their “life list”.

Thanks to Heather Gibson, Finer Details Lifestyle Management!

#29- After realizing the huge need for event planners

At the end of 2021, I cut back on my wedding planning workload so that I could think about what I wanted to do next in my career. The idea I kept coming back to in my heart and my head was event planning for memorials, celebrations of life, and funerals. Over the past few years, I've seen very smart and highly capable people struggle with planning celebrations of life. They struggled because planning a large event while you are grieving and making decisions is a lot to take on. That's when I realized there is a huge need for event planners for memorial services, celebrations of life, and funerals.

Thanks to Lindsey Nickel, Lovely Day Events!
