Why Did You Start Your Business? Week of July 29th

For individuals that constantly view financial statements or business plans each business looks eerily the similar. Even sometimes the brands, logos and names make consumers scream for the days of uniqueness. Peeling back the skin of business, it is often the entrepreneur and business owner that makes a business unique. Each and every business has an entrepreneur and unique story for launching his or her business, and it is that story which make each business special.

Because There Was A Demand for Affordable PR

Originally, I was writing for a few music blogs and didn't like their processes or design, and decided to create my own which grew and 3 years later its organic expansion has created a reputable online magazine with plenty of contributors. I realized there was a demand for affordable PR for those bands without lined wallets but still plenty of talent and created an ‘arm' of the company to cater for this, which is now the fastest-growing and most profitable area of the business.

Because No One Should Go Without the Prescriptions They Need

About 5 years ago I was suffering from a severe allergic skin condition. Doctors had tried everything. Allergy shots, ointments, oral medications, the whole range. Finally, an allergy specialist recommended a newer treatment that was working extremely well for other patients like me. But first, he had to get approval through my insurance. I'll never forget him telling me, I'm sorry, but your insurance won't pay for that medication. My story inspired me to create MedSaverCard. I started my company with the belief that no one should go without the prescriptions they need. So many people don't have health insurance or have insurance but it doesn't cover a particular drug. Our program works by pooling the buying power of thousands of cardholders and negotiating discount prescription prices.

I Couldn't Find Makeup for My Oily Skin

Necessity truly is the mother of invention! I started my business (Mattify! Cosmetics) in September 2009 with only a $15 investment. My motivation? I could not find any brand of makeup that would function well on my oily skin. After researching some oil absorbents online, I decided to purchase the dry ingredients and mix them together to create a transparent face powder, which I titled “Mattify Powder”. My creation worked better than any face powder I had ever purchased. Realizing how much the product helped me, I wanted to share it with the world. I ordered a few cosmetic jars online, and began selling the product on Ebay. This also came at a time of financial struggle for me, so the extra money was a tremendous help. Since the Mattify Powder was selling immediately when I posted Ebay listings, I purchased a domain name and developed a website with some of the profits. I have now expanded to offering 30+ products on my website, all designed specifically for long wear on combination & oily skin types. Everything I know about website development and SEO results I learned by my own research online. My website now appears on the first page of search results for Google any time search terms such as: “makeup for oily skin” or “powder for oily skin” are used. It is an amazing feeling to have grown such a small idea into a flourishing 45K business that helps people who battle with oily skin. The next step for Mattify Cosmetics will be marketing to salons and retailers – we have only just begun.

Because Childhood is but A Fleeting Moment

I became a modern child photographer because childhood is but a fleeting moment made special by each and every child's unique spirit. I wanted to pause time so that the joy of childhood can live on and be shared in images and not just be a memory.

Because There Wasn't Food Markers for My Son

After searching the internet for some sort, any sort, of food markers for my son’s 2nd birthday, it soon became evident that they just didn’t exist. I knew that the incidence of childhood allergies on the rise, so the demand for improved food labelling is ever increasing, even in the domestic setting. Allergy Riders is a fun and simple food labelling system, and for allergy sufferers it’s bringing the life back into parties. Using brightly coloured cupcake baking cups and food flags, Allergy Riders takes the stress out negotiating a food buffet. Guests who have allergies can simply choose food with the appropriate coloured flag or cake cup, and enjoy.
